Greening Westbourne Campaign Update

By | Events, Greening Westbourne | No Comments

WHAT’S YOUR BIG GREEN ISSUE?

Are you batty about bats? Are you passionate about bees and other pollinators?  Does the condition of our trees concern you? Or are you a supporter of the struggling hedgehog?

Or do you have another burning environmental issue close to your heart, like litter or pollution or sustainable transport?

At Greening Westbourne we’re starting to think about activities for next year. If you’re passionate about something and want to do something practical about it, come along to our next meeting on 14 November at 7.30pm at the White Horse, and let’s talk it over.

In the meantime, we’re pushing on with our proposal for bike parking in the Square, and working on these events:

7 Jan – Christmas tree recycling in the Square

With new gift recycling fun. Bring a wrapped unwanted gift and get a mystery swap.

21 Jan – community orchard wassailing event

Celebrate the success of the orchard the traditional way.

Wheels for Westbourne 1st Weekend Round-up

By | Events, Family, Greening Westbourne | No Comments

Our Wheels for Westbourne cycling campaign got under way with some great events last weekend.

Our Bike Doctor session in the Square saw a steady stream of people bring their bikes along for a free tweak to get them road-ready. More than 20 machines got some tender loving care.

The following day up to 30 people, aged four to 70-plus, took part in a led ride around the parish despite some far-from-ideal weather.

Next event: longer ride 19 March. Meet at the Square 10am.

Wheels for Westbourne

Our Wheels for Westbourne cycling campaign gets under way with a series of FREE events in March.

These include:

11 March
Bike Doctor session in the Square. Get your bike out of the shed, dust the cobwebs off and get it ride-ready with a free safety check and adjustments. 11am–2pm.

12 March
Family ride on roads around the parish – about five miles. Meet 2.30pm in the Square.

19 March
Ride further afield, details to come. Meet in the Square at 10am (not as advertised in the village magazine).

28th March
Cycling: the way ahead for Westbourne? Talk on safety followed by discussion. 7.30pm at the White Horse. We hope this event will be a springboard for more events this summer.

Please chat to us at one of these events or drop us an email if you would like to get involved with our cycling campaign.

If you want to train as a ride leader, help out with events (maybe as a marshal) or give us a hand with organisation, do get in touch. You can help as much or as little as you like.

The March events are being held with Emsworth Community Cycling Club, My Journey Hampshire and Cycling UK.

Our goal is to run more events in the summer, and also to get some cycle stands in the centre of the village. But we will only be able to carry on if we can get an informal group of volunteers together.

Can you help?

The point of our campaign is to encourage people to use their bikes for ordinary short trips around the area, instead of driving. This would reduce traffic and pollution, improve people’s health and reduce our carbon footprint.

Our next meeting is 7 March at the White Horse at 7.30pm. Contact us at greeningwestbourne@hotmail.co.uk

Westbourne Greening Update

Wheels for Westbourne

Our big focus for 2017 will be on helping more people cycle in and around the village.

We’re not talking Lycra and massive mileage (though if you’re a serious cyclist, that’s great). We want to encourage people of all ages, shapes and sizes to pedal rather than drive when they need to nip to the shop or pop down to Emsworth.

When we launched Greening Westbourne, one of our main themes was encouraging people to choose cycling or walking when making short trips of under a mile. Since then the village has been given a 20mph limit – an important step in making our streets more hospitable to cyclists and pedestrians.

We are hoping to:

– get some cycle racks installed in the centre of the village
– organise a cycling event in the summer
start an informal group to work on these plans

We achieved the community orchard by getting a passionate group of people together and largely letting them get on with it. We’re hoping that residents with an interest in a cycling project might want to start a similar informal group under our umbrella.

Please let us know if you’re interested. Drop us a line or come and see us at the Christmas tree recycling event (see below).

Give an orchard tree for Christmas

Looking for a Christmas present that’s really worth having and will last a lifetime?

You could buy a tree in the community orchard as a gift – a beautiful, long-lasting present that will enhance the local environment and give pleasure to all.

It costs £50 to sponsor or adopt a tree, and dedication plates are £30. All money will go into orchard funds, used to buy new trees and maintain the area. The application form is here.

After our December planting session, the orchard site, at Hampshire Farm Meadows off Westbourne Road, now has 24 trees. Several have been planted in memory of loved ones.

We will plant nine more on 4 February.

Recycle your Xmas tree

Bring your tree down to the Square between 11am and 1pm on 8 January and we’ll turn it into useful chippings (with the kind help of tree surgeon Mike Reed). Stay for a chat and maybe a mulled wine if you can. Donations welcome.

Keep in touch

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm at the White Horse on 10 January. Or contact us on greeningwestbourne@hotmail.co.uk

Westbourne Orchard growing to twice the size

By | Events, Family, Greening Westbourne | No Comments

Your new community orchard, on the Hampshire Farm Meadows open space, will soon double in size.

Eight more apple trees, sponsored by local people, will be planted at the site, next to the Redlands Grange housing development, at 11am on Saturday 3 December. Come along and help us celebrate the success of the project.

The orchard already has 16 trees. Another eight will be planted in February, bringing the total to 32.

A dozen residents from Westbourne and Emsworth have sponsored trees to be planted on the site.

Orchard growing to twice the size

The orchard already has 16 trees. Another eight will be planted in February, bringing the total to 32.

A dozen residents from Westbourne and Emsworth have sponsored trees to be planted on the site.

You can sponsor a tree in memory of a family member, or to mark a special occasion, and you can also buy a dedication plate. Just click here.

A tree would also make a great Christmas gift, helping the environment and lasting for years and years.

Our goal is to have around 60 fruit trees on the site, with benches nearby and eventually a regular harvest of apples, pears, plums and apricots.

The idea of the orchard is to help preserve traditional fruit varieties and help local people, especially children, get a bit closer to the earth. Growing food locally reminds us that it doesn’t always have to be flown thousands of miles across the world.

A group of volunteers recruited by Greening Westbourne have been working to get the orchard established. Along with local people, Westbourne’s Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have been helping to plant trees. Local tree surgeon Mike Reed has also lent his expertise.

We’re also very grateful for the help of Havant Borough Council and the Tree Council, who are major supporters of the project. The 3 December planting session will be during National Tree Week, organised by the Tree Council.

It costs £50 to sponsor or adopt a tree, and dedication plates are £30. All money will go into orchard funds, used to buy new trees and maintain the area.

Our next meeting is 5 Dec, 7.30pm at the White Horse. Or contact us on greeningwestbourne@hotmail.co.uk
